In a bold move, JioStar has announced the removal of nine channels, including popular names like Vh1, MTV Beats, and Comedy Central, effective March 15, 2025. This decision follows the 7th annual e-auction of DD Freedish and highlights the ongoing transformation of India's television industry.
The removal of these channels reflects changing market dynamics and shifting viewer habits. As more audiences flock to OTT platforms, traditional TV networks, especially those focused on English entertainment and music, are facing a sharp decline in viewership. Viacom18's Vh1 and MTV Beats, once staples for music lovers, have struggled to retain relevance in the age of digital streaming. Experts suggest that as advertisers see a drop in affluent TV audiences, broadcasters have no choice but to adapt.
But this doesn't mean the end for English entertainment on JioStar. Fans can still catch content from the affected channels on JioHotstar, where English entertainment and movies will continue through channels like Colors Infinity and Star Movies.
This move mirrors broader industry trends. Earlier, Disney Star shut down its Star World channel, and Sony Pictures Network India phased out AXN. As more viewers migrate to digital platforms, traditional television networks are being forced to rethink their strategies.
In the evolving landscape of Indian television, it's clear: digital is the future, and the shift is just beginning.
