In the heart of Nepal, a festival unlike any other unfolds each year, celebrating the loyalty and companionship of dogs. Known as Kukur Tihar, this extraordinary event is part of the larger five-day Hindu festival of Tihar, Nepal's version of Diwali.
On the second day of Tihar, dogs both pets and strays are honored in a grand spectacle of love, gratitude, and devotion.
The origins of Kukur Tihar are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. Dogs are believed to be the messengers of Yamraj, the god of death, and are thought to guard the gates of the afterlife. Worshiping them is seen as a way to seek divine protection and guidance, making this festival spiritually significant beyond its outward festivities.
On this day, dogs are adorned with marigold garlands, symbolizing dignity and respect. A sacred red tika is applied to their foreheads, marking them as blessed beings.
Special meals, including milk, eggs, meat, and high-quality dog treats, are offered as a gesture of appreciation. The streets of Nepal transform into a haven of joyful barks and wagging tails as people pay tribute to their four-legged companions.
Beyond homes and temples, service dogs in the police and military are also honored in formal ceremonies. These loyal protectors, trained to assist in security and disaster response, receive special recognition for their invaluable contributions.
Kukur Tihar is more than a festival it is a beautiful testament to the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs, reminding the world of their unwavering love and service.
