In 2007, Salman Khan took a bold step into international cinema with Marigold, a Hollywood-Bollywood hybrid directed by Willard Carroll. Co-starring American actress Ali Larter, the film attempted to blend Bollywood's musical extravagance with Western rom-com sensibilities. Unfortunately, it landed in no-man's land, failing to appeal to either audience.
With a budget of ₹19 crore, Marigold earned a meager ₹1.27 crore in India and a worldwide total of just ₹2 crore, making it Salman Khan's biggest box office disaster. Its release was overshadowed by Chak De India in India and Transformers overseas. Critics slammed the film as awkward, lacking the charm of Bollywood and the polish of Hollywood. Rotten Tomatoes reflects this failure with a dismal 30% rating.
The film's disastrous performance had lasting effects—Willard Carroll never directed another film, and Ali Larter never returned to Bollywood. As for Salman, he rebounded with Wanted in 2009, reigniting his career. But Marigold remains an unforgettable failure in his legacy.
