Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-Canadian businessman and former military doctor, is expected to be brought to India soon. He is a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that killed over 160 people in 2008.
Rana is believed to have helped his childhood friend, David Coleman Headley, carry out reconnaissance of Mumbai before the attacks. He provided cover through his immigration firm, First World International.
Headley later revealed that Rana supported the plot and praised the attacks.
Rana has close ties with terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Pakistan's ISI. While Headley was questioned by Indian agencies in the US in 2010, Rana was never made available, until now.
The US Supreme Court recently rejected Rana's last plea to stop his extradition. He had claimed serious health issues and fear of bias in India. But Indian agencies have pushed hard since 2019 to bring him to justice.
Once in India, Rana will be questioned by the NIA and could provide critical information about the planning and funding of the 26/11 attacks.
