The Malayalam-language sequel to Lucifer was released last Thursday and is performing well at the box office but has faced backlash over its depiction of religious violence.
Hindu groups, including members of BJP, accused the film of referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots, during which anti-Muslim violence occurred when Modi was Gujarat's Chief Minister. The controversy stems from a flashback sequence depicting Hindu extremists committing violence against Muslims, with one perpetrator later gaining political power in Kerala.
Mohanlal addressed the issue in a Facebook post, stating, "As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my films are hostile to any political movement, ideology, or religious group." He added that he and the film’s team "sincerely regret the distress caused" and have decided to make necessary changes. Reports suggest the film might undergo up to 17 cuts, including the removal of a three-minute-long scene and muting certain dialogues.
While the BJP denies launching a formal campaign against the film, some party leaders and right-wing media outlets have criticized it for allegedly distorting historical events and promoting "anti-national themes." The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress, which are politically strong in Kerala, have condemned the backlash as an attack on artistic freedom.
Despite the controversy, L2: Empuraan has been a commercial success, grossing ₹1.5 billion ($17.5 million) in its opening weekend. The film remains in theaters, with changes expected in future screenings.
