No Soap, No Water? TikTok’s Caveman skincare trend is goin viral

A new skincare trend dubbed the "Caveman Method" is gaining traction on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. This approach involves abstaining from all facial products, including cleansers, moisturizers, and even water, with the aim of allowing the skin to reset and heal naturally.

The trend was popularized by 22-year-old TikTok influencer Tia Zakher, who began documenting her journey in March. After years of over-exfoliation and inconsistent skincare routines that led to severe acne and scarring, Zakher decided to stop all forms of facial cleansing. In her videos, she showcases the accumulation of dead skin cells and the textured appearance of her skin, attributing these changes to the natural healing process.

Zakher's approach has sparked widespread debate. While some viewers commend her commitment to natural healing, others express concern over the potential hygiene issues and skin problems that may arise from such an extreme regimen. Dermatologists caution against completely neglecting skincare, emphasizing the importance of basic hygiene practices. Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a board-certified dermatologist, warns that avoiding all forms of cleansing can lead to conditions like dermatitis neglecta or seborrheic dermatitis.

Despite the controversy, Zakher remains steadfast in her routine, stating that she is supported by her dermatologist and is open to adjusting her approach based on her skin's needs. She has recently considered reintroducing water rinses and moisturizers into her regimen.
