Karan Kandhari's debut film, Sister Midnight, takes audiences on a wild, visual journey through the psyche of Uma, a newlywed in Mumbai. Played by Radhika Apte, Uma's life takes a surreal turn after being bitten by a mosquito, leading to a series of bizarre, hallucinatory events.
The film opens with an evocative scene set on a train, symbolizing the tension between tradition and modernity in arranged marriages. Through stunning cinematography and vivid visuals, Kandhari channels Uma’s inner turmoil, juxtaposing a stagnant marriage with an intense, dreamlike reality.
While the plot meanders, the film's beauty lies in its visual pleasures - rich colours, shadowy frames, and quirky characters reminiscent of filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Aki Kaurismäki. However, some elements, like the portrayal of hijras, feel superficial. Despite this, Sister Midnight is an absorbing ride, blending absurdity with a sharp critique of societal norms, and offering a cinematic feast for the senses.
