Google has announced plans to phase out Google Assistant on Android devices later in 2025, replacing it with the AI-powered Gemini. Users will be notified in advance, with an upgrade prompt rolling out soon.
As part of this transition, Assistant will no longer be available for download, and most Android users will be migrated to Gemini. However, devices running Android 9 or earlier will retain Assistant due to Gemini's minimum requirement of Android 10. In a blog post, Google stated, "Nearly a decade later, we're in the midst of another platform shift—this time, generative AI is transforming the way we interact with technology."
Launched in 2023, Gemini introduced AI-driven features like image generation and text summarization but initially lacked core Assistant functionalities. Google has since addressed these gaps, integrating features such as alarm management, media control, app launching, and flashlight toggling. The shift signifies Google's push toward generative AI, making Gemini the new default voice assistant for most Android users.
