Professor Nitasha Kaul, a UK-based academic of Kashmiri Pandit origin, recently had her Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status revoked by the Indian government over alleged "anti-India" activities.
Upon her arrival in India, she received a cancellation notice accusing her of spreading misinformation and targeting Indian institutions through her writing and speeches.
Kaul, who teaches at the University of Westminster, London, specializes in politics, international relations, and interdisciplinary studies, with her work often critiquing Hindutva politics and the Indian government’s stance on Kashmir.
In early 2024, she was denied entry at Bengaluru airport despite being invited by the Congress-led Karnataka government. Right-wing groups objected to her presence, prompting BJP leaders to demand her OCI cancellation.
Born in Gorakhpur in 1976, Kaul holds a PhD in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Hull. She is also a novelist and poet, having published works such as Imagining Economics Otherwise and co-edited Can You Hear Kashmiri Women Speak?
She has testified on Kashmir at international forums, including a 2019 U.S. congressional hearing following the abrogation of Article 370. Kaul termed the OCI cancellation an act of political repression aimed at silencing dissent.
