Can Salt & Mustard Oil Really Whiten Your Teeth?

For centuries, salt and mustard oil have been used for teeth whitening, but does this age-old remedy really work? Many people swear by this combination to brighten their smile. However, dental experts like Dr. Navatha, Senior Consultant-Maxillofacial Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, suggest otherwise.

While salt's abrasive texture and mustard oil's antibacterial properties are often touted as beneficial for oral care, Dr. Navatha warns that using this combination might do more harm than good. The abrasive nature of salt can damage tooth enamel, leading to erosion and increased sensitivity. Furthermore, mustard oil may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

Instead of relying on home remedies, Dr. Navatha emphasizes the importance of professional dental care. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and visiting a dentist for checkups are key to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. So, while salt and mustard oil may offer temporary benefits, it's always best to consult a dentist for long-term results.
