IIT Bombay has announced the launch of its first-ever international campus through a collaboration with Japan's Tohoku University.
The newly established Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE) will be located in Sendai, Japan, and aims to deepen academic cooperation between the two nations. The initiative was formalized in April 2025 and attended by dignitaries from both countries.
Initially, the institute will offer a dual doctoral degree (PhD) program, with MTech programs expected to be introduced soon after. No undergraduate courses are planned at this stage.
The collaboration focuses on cutting-edge research in areas such as sustainable energy, artificial intelligence, materials science, and disaster resilience.
Leaders from both IIT Bombay and Tohoku University envision this initiative as a platform for innovation, global academic exchange, and industry collaboration.
The move is described as a strategic milestone, enhancing India-Japan relations while encouraging cross-border education. The JIE also builds on the success of earlier student immersion programs and aims to increase the presence of Indian students in Japan.
