A new Covid-19 wave is sweeping across parts of Asia, with Hong Kong and Singapore seeing noticeable surges in infections.
Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection has confirmed that current virus activity is "quite high," with a peak in positive respiratory samples and 31 severe cases reported in the week ending May 3.
Hospital and clinic visits for Covid symptoms, along with increased virus traces in wastewater, further indicate widespread transmission.
Singapore has also seen a rise in cases, reporting a 28% weekly increase to around 14,200 cases by May 3, the country's first Covid update in nearly a year. Hospital admissions rose by 30%, though health officials say the rise is likely due to waning immunity rather than a more severe virus strain.
Infections are growing in other Asian countries as well. China is facing another wave, with its Covid test positivity rate more than doubling in five weeks.
Thailand reported spikes following its Songkran festival in April. Authorities across the region are urging at-risk groups to stay updated with booster vaccinations, especially with the virus continuing to circulate even during the summer.
