On November 17, 1962, during the Sino-Indian War, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles displayed unparalleled bravery in the Battle of Nuranang, Arunachal Pradesh.
Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Rawat, alongside two local Monpa girls, Sela and Nura, created multiple firing positions to deceive the advancing Chinese troops.
For 72 hours, he single-handedly held off over 300 Chinese soldiers, inflicting significant casualties before he was eventually overwhelmed and martyred. His actions not only delayed the enemy's advance but also exemplified the indomitable spirit of the Indian soldier.
Posthumously, Rawat was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest wartime gallantry award, for his exceptional valor.
The 4th Garhwal Rifles was also honored with the Battle Honour "Nuranang," the only such recognition for an Indian Army unit during the 1962 war.
Today, the Jaswant Garh War Memorial stands as a testament to his heroism, with his belongings preserved and his memory cherished by all who visit.
